The painting arose out of a Mother’s Day weekend trip to Tennessee. I was walking with my mom on the road by the sister house (a vacation home we four sisters and spouses share) and we saw this lovely rose bush at the neighbors.’ We didn’t have our usual scissors, but we saw another neighbor walking and asked for his pocketknife. He was with his wife. She told us they also steal those roses. Then I put the roses in a vase my sister Sally had brought to the sister house and put it in the light of the almost setting sun on the deck railing. I won a first place for the painting in the Hispanic Gallery at the New Mexico State Fair that year.
