This plant was in the Balboa Park Botanic Gardens. I corresponded with the botanist from the U.S. Botanic Gardens, who told me he thought the flower was a begonia “Freddie.” He put me in touch with the botanist at Balboa Park, who confirmed that the flower indeed is a begonia “Freddie.” When I took the photograph I used as a reference for this painting, I knew when I looked in the view finder of my camera that I would paint the scene. I felt like the background looked like stained glass.
